Where can I find information on the U-M Tuition Support Program?

The SPG that describes the UM tuition support policy is SPG 201.69-0, located at the following website: http://spg.umich.edu/pdf/201.69-0.pdf

This policy is administered locally within the unit, so the first person you should talk with is your supervisor. Additional help and counsel would be available from your unit manager, or your HR representative at http://hr.umich.edu/staffhr/.

The online staff handbook also has some additional information: http://hr.umich.edu/staffhandbook/

What is the U-M Staff Development Philosophy?

The University of Michigan Staff Development Philosophy, endorsed by the UM Executive Officers, is available at the following website: http://hr.umich.edu/training.html

Guidelines concerning support for professional development are administered at the unit level, and practice can vary considerably between University departments. The most common practice among units is to provide released time and funding for courses taught locally (i.e., through HRD http://hrd.umich.edu/ and ITS http://www.itd.umich.edu/education/) that are directly relevant to the employee's current job or ones that would support career advancement potential. Support for off-site workshops, conferences and memberships is often more restricted.

For further information, you might want to talk with your department manager, the HR manager for your school/college or the HR Consultant at UHR's Staff HR Services (http://hr.umich.edu/staffhr/) unit (763-2387).

Can U-M-HRD come to my location if I am not within the University of Michigan?

Our programs are designed for employees at the University of Michigan and we are not organized to offer training or consulting elsewhere. The University of Michigan's Executive Education Program is designed to offer training to an international clientele. Their website is located at: http://execed.bus.umich.edu. A Google search for training sources at your location (e.g., "training on listening skills in NYC") should provide you with information on the hundreds of private companies that offer training that may be of interest to you. You could also contact the American Society for Training and Development http://www.astd.org/astd to see if they have member organizations in your area to recommend. Thank you again for your interest in our programs and good luck with your effort to find training appropriate for your interests.
