Working Effectively with Faculty and/or Physicians
Working with faculty members and/or physicians takes special insights, approaches and ingenuity. Through years of consulting, research, training and presentations, Dr. Christy has created the first ever book/training/comprehensive approach for building strong staff-faculty relationships. The same approach can also be applied to staff-physician relationships.
• Recognize how working with faculty/physicians is different from the traditional boss-subordinate relationships in other organizations
• Assess the opportunities and challenges of working with faculty/physicians
• Examine how to accurately interpret faculty/physician communication and work styles, priorities, needs and pressures
• Apply strategies and best practices to orient and communicate with faculty/physicians in a positive and productive manner
• Develop helpful strategies to partner with faculty/physicians in helping them follow important administrative procedures for your collective success
• Identify various ways to recognize and attempt to influence difficult faculty members and/or physicians

In today’s complex workplace, we need to be methodical and think through our process, goals, interests and those of our allies. Managing in an Academic Environment: Skills for Managers and Supervisors
As a manager or supervisor in a research university, you have special challenges and opportunities that make your job different from your cohorts in other organizations. This half-day workshop focuses on perspectives and skills to guide and support staff to understand academia, work effectively with faculty, and build a successful organization.
You will learn to:
• Apply techniques for managing staff in an academic setting that are different from boss-subordinate relationships in other organizations
• Determine how to orient staff to the academic culture and structure so they can better understand faculty work styles, priorities and stresses
• Use principles, strategies and best practices to help staff to better manage faculty expectations
• Find ways to help faculty to understand and adhere to administrative procedures
• Identify ways to leverage the uniqueness of the academic environment to build a stronger team
You will benefit by:
• Increasing staff awareness of how their relationships with faculty can affect their job and educational outcomes
• Applying the research results of the world's greatest managers to your work at U-M
• Building respect and strong connections between staff and faculty
