AM Breakout Sessions:
Sam Amine:
Keeping Them Motivated by Unleashing Untapped Potential in Your Team
The best teams have a fantastic first-string line-up but also “bench strength.” Great coaches know they can’t just keep the stars in the team happy, they also have to motivate and encourage the second and third string players so they’re ready to step in when needed. The same is true of managers in the workplace. But how do you do it? How do you keep your “bench” invested and growing when there is a possibility they will never get to play…or work on that coveted project or be recognized for their behind the scene work?
Join two-time Coach of the Year, two-time Big Ten Champion and Olympic qualifier Sam Amine to learn how Sam keeps all his players motivated by tapping into their unleashed potential…and how you can apply his lessons to your staff.

Rom LaPointe:Â
Zoom! High Performance Leadership
Do you ever feel frustrated or overwhelmed? The demands for leaders have never been greater. The amount of change, the speed of decision making, and the constant connection to technology often get in the way of true effectiveness. This session is about you. You will learn powerful strategies for sustained high performance, including the most important skill leaders need to master. You will leave the session with a clear action plan to take what you've learned and put it into practice.
Valerie Johnson and Mark Burns:Â
MCubed: The University's Revolutionary New Way of Funding Research
Although MCubed has made a big splash on the national and U-M research scene this fall, this first-of-its-kind initiative was actually several years in the making. Frustrated by the ways that the traditional research funding process constrained innovation, a small group of faculty members and administrators imagined something different: putting real-time seed funding in the hands of interdisciplinary faculty teams embarking on high-risk, high-impact research and scholarship. They began a journey of mapping out their vision, persuading others to embrace it, considering feedback from multiple campus units, and ultimately refining the program so that it became a campus-wide initiative. Fast forward to the present, where MCubed—in itself an innovation—is now expediting the innovations of over 500 faculty members through the funding of 167 cubes.
This session will offer a history of MCubed’s development, with an emphasis on the challenges of and strategies for moving a great idea into an exciting reality—something that we each have the potential to do.
Megan Torrance:Â
Can we build it? Yes we can!Â
Let’s get down to work! Every team operates in an environment, influenced strongly by its leader. Either by design or by default, that environment is reflected in the level of service delivered to clients and customers. In this interactive workshop, we’ll explore eight factors that set the stage for delivering excellent service in an innovative and constantly changing ecosystem. You’ll share ideas with your colleagues and build an action plan to take back to your own team and get started right away.
TorranceLearning is an innovative, creative developer of award-winning technology-based learning solutions for clients from mid-sized local companies to the Fortune 100. How creative? The company tells new hires that the goal is to be innovating so fast that last year’s work pales in comparison. We’ll use TorranceLearning as a case study for this session, but each participant will build his or her own action plan. CEO Megan Torrance will share insights – what works, and what hasn’t worked so well – and ideas based on nearly 20 years of experience in building high performing teams from large accounting processing centers to small business elearning development.
Afternoon Panel Session: facilitated by Dr. Bryan K. Williams, panelists include Carol Bradford, M.D., Karin Muraszko, M.D., and Esrold Nurse, Ph.D.
Concepts are wonderful, application of those concepts throughout the University of Michigan is even better. Our panel will use the "5 star teams" framework and take a deeper dive into how the framework was or was not realized in U-M teams on Central Campus, the Medical Campus and elsewhere. They will also address “5 star failures” and how using the 5 star team approach might have made a difference. Bring questions for our panel.Â
